Holistic Psychiatrists in the United States

This is a list of all holistic psychiatrists I could find online for each U.S. state.

Holistic Psychiatrists in the United States

Psychiatrists Who First Do No Harm

What’s so excellent about these physicians compared to ‘traditional-oriented psychiatrists’? Lots. They won’t victimize you by prescribing medications you do not need.

And will not then further victimize you by ignoring the signs of these meds making you worse, ignore your complaints and instead just write more and more prescriptions to treat the ‘chemical imbalance’ in your brain they know is hogwash.

Related post: What is the Chemical Imbalance Theory?

In addition, many of these physicians will refer you to other care practitioners for treatment if they think it is warranted i.e. general practitioners, medical specialists, etc.

Will They Prescribe Medications to Treat My Symptoms?

I have no idea – you have to contact the doctor’s office and get more detailed information about what treatments they do and do not offer. Some do prescribe psychotropic medications in some cases, others do not.

Use This List to Get Referrals

If a physician you want to see is not taking new clients or the wait list is too long contact the office and ask for a referral to similar care providers.

Note: I’m focusing on psychiatrists here but there are many health providers who deal with mental-physical health conditions: functional medicine doctors, environmental illness specialists, endocrinologists, etc.

And there are many ‘regular’ docs who victimize patients similar to traditional psychiatry i.e. prescribe brain damaging medications and not treat underlying health issues.

The goal is to find help for the underlying cause of your symptoms, and avoid like the plague long-term use of any psychotropic medication.

List of Holistic Psychiatrists in the U.S.

Alphabetized by state.

Charles Hayden, M.D. – Located in Huntsville, AL.

Dr. Hayden focuses on alternative treatment approaches, and a specialty of his is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) . TMS is a non-drug approach found to be successful for depression, including severe depression and treatment-resistant depression.

Quoted from the website:

“I want the patient to be informed of alturnative treatments – exercise, light therapy, nutrition and lifestyle issues, spiritual practices etc.”

Brilliant! He has been featured on the Dr. Oz show.

I do not think “Treatment-Resistant Depression” is a term that should be used. Here is why: Treatment Resistence is Your Body Saying No.

Ty R. Vincent, M.D. – Located in Wasilla, AK.

Note:   Dr. Vincent was listed as a psychiatrist then when I visited his site (excellent and completely holistic-oriented) found he is licensed in family medicine. But – I could find NO holistic or integrative-type psychiatrist for the state of Alaska.

This guy can work with any symptoms, he understands a whole-body approach and has specialized training in Environmental Medicine. And he is affordable with a sliding fee scale. Double score.

David Haas, M.D. – Located in Maumelle, AR.

Quoted from the website:

“Dr. Haas likes to partner with his patients and empower them to take control of their overall wellness. He does this by utilizing integrative psychiatry.”

“This type of care uses therapeutic services such as nutrition, bio-identical hormones with serum and saliva testing, psychotherapy and conventional medications and wellness products available.”

I almost gave up trying to find a holistic-oriented psychiatrist in Arkansas, then found Dr. Haas. Phew!

He (his clinic) works with children, adolescents and adults and offer many services such as bio-identical hormone replacement, nutrition, play therapy, pain management and treatment for addictions (sex, drugs, eating disorders, etc.).

David Gersten, M.D. – Located in Encinatas, CA.

Quoted from the website:

“It is essential to treat each person as unique without quickly labeling someone with a permanent diagnosis. People come to see Dr. Gersten for a huge variety of symptoms, but the 2 or 3 symptoms are the tip of the iceberg.”

“Underneath the tip of that iceberg are vast disturbances of total body biochemistry, adrenal stress, and inflammation. By treating the entire “iceberg,” the presenting complaints, the symptoms, almost always are improved or cured.”

Love the iceberg analogy and this is EXACTLY the type of care you want to try and heal your brain-body-emotional issues. Whatever made you sick (genetics, environment, abuse, toxins), let Dr. Gersten and his team help you find ways to heal.

“In addition, I am trained in the treatment of gut dysbiosis and inflammation. I also refer to and collaborate with naturopaths and acupuncturists as needed.”

Dr. Malik works with both adults and adolescents. He does prescribe psychotropic medications for some.

Scott Shannon, M.D. – Located in Ft. Collins, CO.

Quoted from the website:

“If you or someone you love is suffering with chronic mental health issues and has not responded to prior care and you’re looking for an alternative, or you’re looking for a second opinion, then this program could be the ticket to wellness and a better quality of life.”

“The focus of our CAP Program is on identifying underlying core issues such as inflammation, methylation problems, nutritional imbalances, food allergies, and sleep and lifestyle/behavior patterns.”

This is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who uses micronutrients and other non-drug treatments to treat various forms of mental illness. He teaches integrative psychiatry to other psychiatrists and is a leader in the field.

If you need treatment for your child, this is the type of care you want. If you are not in Colorado, call and ask for a referral. He networks with many psychiatrists throughout the U.S. who are trying to treat root causes, not suppress symptoms with psychotropic medications that lead to disability and worse with long-term use.

Quoted from the website:

“Complementary modalities of treatment emphasis the mind-body-soul connection in mental health symptoms, and include interventions such as Nutritional and Vitamin/Herbal Supplementation, Meditation and Mindfulness Techniques, Exercise/Body Awareness and Stress Management/Relaxation Techniques.”

Dr. Shadid works with adults. Strong focus on alternative treatment approaches – check out her beautifully-designed website – but does use pyschiatric medications in some cases.

David London, M.D. – Located in Waterford, CT.

Quoted from the website:

“We will begin to explore natural and benign treatments to maximize your potential. We will attend closely to your unique biological and psychological, social and cultural circumstances.”

Sounds like a very empathic and sharp doc who is willing to work with you to heal underlying issues that have created illness states in your body. Rather than write prescriptions that will end-up making you sicker in the long run.

That’s the goal here.

Deborah Simkin, M.D. – Located in Destin, Fl.

If you – or your child – is suffering with serious physical-emotional health issues this is the type of psychiatrist you want to work with.

This is a true ‘functional psychiatrist’ who works to find the root cause – or causes – of psychiatric-labeled illness: ADHD, PTSD, depression, bipolar, fatigue, traumatic brain syndrome, and many more.

Quoted from the website:

“She utilizes many complementary and integrative interventions which include, but are not limited to, such things as, genetic testing, cognitive behavior therapy, nutritional and herbal interventions, meditation, and LORETA neurofeedback.”

David Scheiderer, M.D. – Located in Sarasota, FL.

Dr. Schneiderer is a public figure who lectures about psychiatry and functional medicine. Brilliant, may he teach many the new way of approaching mental ‘symptoms of distress’ and what can be going on in the body in addition to lifestyle and personal issues of the patient.

His business – Integrative Psychiatry.net – is pretty cool and VERY holistic oriented. From the extensive website you can order testing of your neurotransmitter levels, find out what testing may be appropriate for the symptoms you are experiencing, etc.

Does phone consultations, information on the website.

Greta Krause, M.D. – Located in Plainfield, IN.

Quoted from the website;

“As your physician, my goal is to discover the root cause of your symptoms. Frequently, the symptoms of fatigue, poor concentration, lack of motivation, depressed, sad mood, and even excess weight are not the result of “mental problems” but rather due to a deeper, underlying health issue.”

“By addressing the root cause of the symptom, we decrease the liklihood of further dysfunction and increase the possibility for long lasting, successful outcomes.”

Address root cause of symptoms, increase possibility of long lasting, successful outcomes. Music to my brain. Yours?

This type of psychiatrist is not drug-oriented. Not controlled by Big Pharma. Exactly what you want.

I could find no holistic psychiatrist in Maine, only one who recently put up a website claiming “holistic psychiatry” then clarifies on homepage he prescribes medications as treatment.

What a jerk and exactly the type of ‘doctor’ (would not call him that personally) you want to AVOID like the plague.

He’s a Big Pharma puppet who will make you sicker and sicker – not to mention the deceptive advertising going on.

Alice W. Lee, M.D. – Located in Gaithersburg, MD.

Quoted from the website:

“Alice W. Lee, MD, ABIHM is a holistic and integrative psychiatrist practicing in Gaithersburg, Maryland, who combines nutritional medicine (orthomolecular psychiatry), energy medicine, and other alternative therapies in the holistic and integrative treatment of mental health conditions.”

Judy Tsafrir, M.D. – Located in Newton, MA.

Quoted from the website:

“The foundation of cultivating psychiatric holistic health is attending to the reality that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Western medicine treats the body as a piece of flesh to manipulate with pharmaceuticals and procedures, without any consideration or inclusion of the Sacred.”

Very holistic-oriented psychiatrist who treats both children and adults. Has specialized training in the Walsh Approach to mental and physical wellness. Will test for underlying health conditions and recommend alternative treatments such as diet, supplements, fixing your gut health, etc.

I devulge in my book how alternative care and learning about environmental illness helped heal severe mania and depressive states of my BP-1. Bipolar 1 Disorder – How to Survive and Thrive.

Dr. Tsafrir wrote an excellent article about her experience with toxic mold creating temporary illness issues (depression, anxiety) and how she healed: Toxic Mold and Psychiatric Symptoms.

Robert Berezin, M.D. – Located in Lexington, MA.

Quoted from the website:

“For many years I have been troubled by the rapid and tragic degeneration of my field. Contemporary psychiatry has fallen under the sway of biological psychiatry, where patients no longer receive proper care.”

“Today’s commonly held and misguided belief is that human suffering is a brain problem. And the cure for human pain has been reduced to a pill, as if pharmaceuticals address the agency of human suffering. Human struggle is not now, nor ever has been a brain problem. It is a human problem, pure and simple.”

Another ‘wow’ moment when I found information on this psychiatrist. His career spans more than forty years and includes time spent teaching and supervising at the Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, creating and implementing innovative public mental health programs in addition to his private practice.

He developed a novel method for working with patients: “Psychotherapy of Character” and wrote a book about it. He blogs and speaks out about current day psychiatry. See what I mean? Wow.

Functional Medicine practitioners may recommend diet modification, exercise, lifestyle changes, stress management tools, detoxification support, natural supplements, and, when necessary, prescription medications.”

Here’s how this doc describes himself: “Psychiatrist. Functional Medicine Enthusiast. Truth Seeker. Dreamer. Spirit in Evolution.” Sounds like my kind of doctor. You?

Steven Harvey, M.D. – Located in St. Louis, MO.

Quoted from the website:

“TMS St Louis offers deep transcranial stimulation, a new FDA-approved option for treatment-refractory major depression. TMS is safe and effective, and often works for those who do not improve with medications, or cannot tolerate them. Side effects are minimal, and include scalp discomfort.”

“Our typical patient is someone who continues to be depressed in spite of several different medications.”

TMS is not the same – or even similar – to ECT. TMS does not require anasthesia, does not induce seizures or cause memory loss. It is safe, FDA-approved and effective.

I’ve spoken out about brain damaging ECT on my Bipolar 1 Survivor blog and will continue to do so: ECT Machines Have Never Been Tested.

Martin Fakiel, M.D. – Las Vegas, NV.

Quoted from the website:

“Many people also find that psychiatrists can be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and the hassles of daily life. Psychiatrists can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution.”

His website tagline is “Psychiatrist in Las Vegas, Holistic Approach.” I thought to myself, ‘I found my guy’. LOL.

Combines Integrative Psychiatry and functional medicine with classic Chinese Medicine. Offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS) – used for severe depression and is not brain damaging like ECT.

Quatitative EEG / Brain Mapping – used to identify abnormal brain waves in the brain that then are treated with neurofeedback.

Incredibly cool.

Lindsey Cole, M.D. – Located in Columbus, OH.

Quoted from the website:

“I’m a traditionally trained psychiatrist who noticed that patients with certain co-existing conditions would consistently fail to respond to usual treatments for their psychiatric condition.”

“This frustration led to additional training in functional medicine, an emerging approach to patient care that looks at the entire body as integrated and holistic in design.”

Practice Description: Functional psychiatry (depression, bipolar, anxiety disorders and ADHD).

This is exactly the type of physician I wanted to highlight on this list. Awesome.

“As an osteopathic psychiatrist, Dr Borman comes from a form of medicine founded on the philosophy that all body systems are interrelated and dependent upon one another for good health; that the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit; and that we should focus on treating the whole patient, rather than just the disease.”

This ‘whole body approach’ doc works in a large clinic with many health providers and other psychiatrists. Dr. Borman is an Osteopathic Physician who is board certified in psychiatry.

Brett Nelson, M.D. – Located in Rapid City, SD.

Talks about an “integrative approach”, but from the website looks like he still writes a lot of prescriptions. Tread cautiously.

Dr. Nelson is a pediatric and adolescent trained psychiatrist. Giving brain damaging medications to children is not appropriate health care – in my humble opinion. And it kills.

Hi, you will want to remove Malika Burman from the Oregon list. She is not what she claims; gave me the wrong dx (after years of working with the correct one with several other therapists), told me my (actual correct) dx is volatile and violent (false), told me she’d treat it with anti-psychotics (also false and I do horribly on them- which I told her, and she said we’d not be a good fit), and told me she’d take me off a med with no titration (which could put me into seizures or kill me). So much for “do no harm”. She was also very aggressive and had a “my way or the highway” attitude.

Hi Kiya I will, thank you for sharing your story. And yes, that sounds awful and not appropriate care. I did hesitate to put her on there (as it was clear she uses psychotropic medications) but couldn’t find any other option. I hope you have found some better care.

If you have anyone to recommend please pass on… I’ve removed Dr. Burman from the list.

      Peace, Molly

She probably got tired of drug seekers being manipulative to get benzodiazepines? Are you who say you are? At least she goes by her real name.

Hi Bigtex, there was nothing in the comment – or my reply – to support either of your remarks, so not sure where you are coming from. I responded to someone’s experience (there is a ‘name’ with comment, I cannot verify ‘real’ or not – you are not using a name, however) and removed Dr. Burman as she wasn’t the type of psychiatrist I wanted to feature in the first place, just was the best option online I found.

If you have a referral for Portland, please pass on.

The benzodiazepines part makes no sense either – the original poster said nothing related, and any psychiatrist is capable of writing prescriptions or not writing them… we’d hope with good medical judgement. That’s more the issue and why the list is needed, most psychiatrist are Big Pharma pawns, still babbling about a ‘chemical imbalance’ though it has thoroughly been proven false for almost 50 years now, and writing prescriptions simply to appease forces that be and make money. Who care if the person gets worse, disabled or dies.

Again, if you or anyone has a referral for Portland that fits with the focus of the list, I’d love to add it in.

        take care, Molly
